Service Overview

Driveways, Patios & Paving —
The Brief, In Plain English.

What It Is

Hard-standing paving works — porcelain tiles and natural-stone flag patios; block-paved driveways and pathways. We don't offer full garden renovations, decking, fencing, planting or turf schemes — this service is focused on getting the paved surfaces of your drive and patio laid properly.

Who It's For

Homeowners across the Northwest whose gardens are tired, sloping, poorly drained or simply unused. Equally suitable for buyers of new-build properties where the developer's 'completed' garden is bare topsoil and a strip of cheap fencing, and for established gardens where the original 1980s flag patio has had its day.

When You Need It

April through October is peak landscaping season in our region — but the trades that get good work done in November and February are the ones worth booking in summer. Book the survey 6–12 weeks ahead of preferred start date to lock in a slot in the programme.

Why It Matters

A properly laid patio adds outdoor living space that runs from April through October — usable, dry, jointed and level. A poorly laid one sinks, lifts, stains and pools water within two winters. The difference is entirely down to the sub-base and the jointing — both of which the cheapest quote will skimp on.

What Happens If You Wait

The Cost Of
Doing Nothing.

Most patio failures we get called to rip out share the same three faults: insufficient sub-base depth, dot-and-dab bedding (instead of full mortar bed), and dry-brush kiln-dried sand jointing on slabs that should have been wet-grouted. All three look fine on day one and fail by year two.

Risks Of Ignoring It

  • Patios laid on 50mm of MOT instead of 150mm — settlement, lippage, ponding water within 18 months.
  • Dot-and-dab bedding under porous flags — picture-frame staining as water tracks through to the bedding voids.
  • Slopes laid to no fall or wrong fall — water pooling against the house, splashback up the wall above DPC.
  • Block-paved drives without edge restraint — paving creeping outward, joint lines opening up.
  • Porcelain laid without a slurry-primer coat — slabs debonding from the mortar bed inside a season.

Common Mistakes Customers Make

  • ×Hiring on price alone — the cheapest patio quote is almost always missing the proper sub-base depth.
  • ×Choosing the slab before deciding on the jointing system — wrong slab for wet-grout, wrong slab for kiln-dried sand.
  • ×Skipping the surface-water drainage — patio sits against the house wall, water tracks back inside.
  • ×Buying block paving without checking edge-restraint detail — blocks creep outward on year one.
  • ×Skimping on sub-base depth on a drive — settlement wheel ruts under the first winter.

Why It's Worth It

What You
Actually Get.

150mm MOT Sub-Base Minimum

Sub-base laid in 75mm lifts and whacker-compacted between layers. Foundation for paving that stays level a decade later.

Full Mortar Bed, Not Dot-And-Dab

All paving bedded on full 4:1 sharp-sand-and-cement mortar bed. Eliminates picture-frame staining on porous stone.

Wet-Grout Or Compound Joints

Wet-grouted jointing in colour-matched mortar, or resin-based jointing compound (Geo-Fix, Romex, Vdw) per material. No kiln-dried sand on patio joints.

Falls & Surface Drainage Detailed

Falls calculated on every patio and drive so water runs off the paving and away from the house — not toward it.

Edges Finished Cleanly

Paving finished against clean, pinned or haunched edges — no crumbling perimeter after the first winter.

5-Year Callback Promise

Ryan will return to fix any workmanship issue within 5 years.

Full Service Area Map

Flagstone Patios

Natural-stone and reconstituted flag patios laid on 150mm compacted MOT sub-base with 30–40mm full-bed sharp-sand-and-cement mortar. Wet-grouted with colour-matched mortar or resin-based jointing compound per material. Proper falls (1:80 minimum) away from the house. Picture-framed against the house DPC at minimum 150mm below.

Porcelain Tiles & Paving

Vitrified porcelain paving (e.g. Marshalls Symphony, Bradstone Mode, Stonemarket Eclipse) — virtually maintenance-free, no sealing required, dimensionally consistent for tighter joint lines than natural stone. Demands a slurry-primer coat on the underside of every slab before bedding (porcelain doesn't bond to mortar unless primed). Wet-grouted joints only — kiln-dried sand fails on porcelain.

Block Paving — Drives & Pathways

Tobermore, Marshalls, Brett or Bradstone block paving for driveways and paths — laid on 150mm sub-base, 50mm sharp-sand bedding course, kiln-dried sand jointing brushed in and vibrated. Edge restraint mandatory on every block-paved area — concrete haunched against treated timber or pinned-in kerb edge. Driveways tied into existing road profile, paths levelled to garden grades.

Questions

Straight
Answers.

Cost, timeline, guarantees, availability — the questions everyone asks, answered before you call.

Ask Yours

How much does a patio cost in Liverpool?

+

Flagstone patios typically £110–£150 per m² laid; porcelain £140–£200 per m² laid. Block-paved drives £85–£120 per m² laid. Excavation, muck-away, sub-base and jointing all included. Quoted in writing per project after a free survey.

How long does a patio installation take?

+

Standard 30–50m² patio runs 5–10 working days from excavation to clean-up. Block-paved drives 5–8 working days for an average drive.

Do you need planning permission for a patio or drive?

+

Patios at ground level typically don't need planning. Drives over 5m² that drain to the highway require SUDS-compliant permeable paving or surface-water permission. Walls over 1m next to a highway need planning. We check at survey.

What's the difference between natural flags and porcelain?

+

Natural flagstone is warm in colour, porous, needs sealing, will weather and patina. Porcelain is manufactured, dimensionally consistent, virtually maintenance-free, never weathers. Natural stone is cheaper to buy and lay; porcelain costs more upfront but pays back over time on maintenance.

What guarantee do you offer?

+

Ryan will return to fix any workmanship issue within 5 years of completion. Material manufacturer warranties run separately.

Do you offer full garden renovations, decking or fencing?

+

No — we focus on the hard paved surfaces: block paving, porcelain tiles, flagstones, driveways and patios. We don't take on full landscaping, planting, decking or fencing schemes.

Do you build garden walls?

+

Structural brick walls fall under our brickwork service — see the Brickwork page. Landscaping-only projects here are limited to the paved surfaces of drives and patios.

Which areas do you cover?

+

Liverpool, Ormskirk, Southport, Formby, Skelmersdale and surrounding Northwest England on a sensible travel radius from our Huyton base.
